is an ardent admirer of the
mirror. One thing which sustained my admiration for the mirror was its ability
to tell you (without voicing actually) what no one could tell you about how you
look. The mirror when looked into, with a speed so swift than the ‘coming and
going of split seconds’ describes you as much as it can see.
You
know, I have read the Achebe’s; the Adichie’s; even the Shakespeare’s and the
yeat’s of this world. The dexterity they exhibit in description is second to
none until the mirror writes. In its writing, the reader is never at loss. The
reader sees everything just the way it is. No wonder they say the mirror never
lies!
Hmmmm…I need a brief pause; I
mean a short stop. I guess I’m lost here! I just realized that the mirror is a
liar!...
So, I’m sorry, I have to change the title of this writing. I am
cancelling the title of this writing ‘THE MIRROR NEVER LIES’. I am changing
it to the opposite ‘THE MIRROR IS A
LIAR’ I hope you’d excuse me since I need must face the fact.
Ok, look at it this way, you just wrote a not-too-cool exam; you just messed up at an interview; you just preached the gospel to a person/people but it doesn’t feel like you did anything close to good; you just put all your effort into impressing him/her but ‘for God’s sake’, it’s just like a waste; you got a bad news from home, work, friends etc and bla bla bla!
Now, those are what your environment
says. So, you begin to see yourself as failed. Then, you look in the mirror,
what you see scares you to death. You see a supposedly failed you. Standing
before the mirror and staring, what it sees about you is just that physical
you; the wrinkles that tiredness has crested thereon; the frustration resulting
there from. Of course, what else could
it have seen? Then, you think to yourself ‘why me?’
Well, the
question really is, ‘who says that was you?’ The mirror? Hey, the mirror lied!
The worries boldly written on your face is what the mirror sees. It can never
see the giant concealed within you. The mirror is blind to the truth of whom
you really are. So, how did it know you failed? Sure, THE MIRROR LIED. It said
the wrong thing about you.
The real you is a treasure in
the hands of the Almighty. It is invisible to the mirror. So, whatever it told
you about whom you are or who you will be was wrong. YES THE MIRROR IS A LIAR!!! Hear what the bible says in Jer. 17:5-6
“Thus saith the LORD; cursed be
the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart
departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and
shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the
wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited”.
Trusting in the
works of man is a curse to man, but trusting in the finished work on the cross
is a sure assurance of success because “blessed is the man that trusts in the LORD,
and whose hope is the LORD”. Jer. 17:7.
